Ishbel Update

As you know I've had a love/hate relationship with my Ishbel. I have resigned myself to only working on it during the weekends when I am refreshed. This has made for slow going on it, however I'm able to take the time I need to read the charts and knit like I'm supposed to. I'm refusing to have to frog this project a 4th time!!

Here is what it currently looks like:

I've completed 3 of the sections and I'm quite proud of it! I'm ready to insert another life line on this next row. I'm also at the point where I can made a decision to have a larger lace section or keep the smaller section. I'm going to think about it for a few days. It would mean a bigger shawl, however more lace knitting but I have plenty of yarn. Hmmm, decisions, decisions.

Here is a closeup of the lace section:

Since work has been so stressful lately, and I like to knit during the week not just weekends, I've cast on for another mindless knit to unwind at night.

Pattern: Just Enough Ruffles Scarf.
Yarn: Universal Yarn Cotton Supreme
Colorway: Dusty Rose
Purchased at: The Loopy Ewe
Needles: US 9, 36" circulars

This yarn is a joy to work with. It is so smooth in your hands and on my Harmony needles the knitting is flying along.

Hope you are outside enjoying this fine weather weekend we are having in New England!

A Stash

I've been a web lurker lately. I've been staying in touch with my favorite blogs over the past few weeks, however, I've been absent from my own.

In my reading the blogs of others, I've almost always found a stash photo. Some of those photos have made my jaw drop with how many skeins or rooms they take over, while others have been, in my opinion, very manageable. It was time for me to take a photo of my entire stash.

So, what exactly is in my stash?

Starting at the top left to right (clockwise) is my Cascade Fixation, Rowan Cotton, SR Kertzer, Crystal Palace Panda Cotton, Handmaiden Sea Three & Sea Silk, Ultimate Cotton, Artful Yarns Fable, Knit One Crochet Two, Sugar 'N Creme, Lorna's Laces Pearl, Schoeller & Stahl Sockina, Mission Falls 1824 Cotton, Rowan Cotton Tweed, Ellyn Cooper Canasta, Tahki Cotton Classic, Sugar Bunny Boulevard, Classic Elite, Stacy Charles Kyoto.

I think my stash falls under the manageable category. It isn't a stash that I have more than I'll ever knit. The best part is it still all fits into one LLBean zippered canvas tote bag. When I use a skein I can buy one. It works for me. Although I have slipped a bit at times, however before anyone noticed the yarn has been knit up.

As I get better with knitting socks and hit my goal of learning the magic loop method I see the using up of the Panda Cotton. Many of the lace skeins are matched up to shawl patterns in my Ravelry que. I even have my skeins to make a bunny, of course!

The only skeins missing are those current WIP's, white Panda Cotton (for dying) and my Tussah Silk.

Not surprising is the lack of wool, angora, cashmere, alpaca etc.  as those would not work well with my allergies.

What I do find interesting are my color selections. You see a heavy influence of my favorite color - blue. Yet, there are some happy colors, bright orange from Tahki, bright colors from Ellyn Cooper and a rose color from Universal Yarns. I even bought bright orange Panda Cotton for socks.

I'm off to make some more bread as this loaf has disappeared already!

April color

It is all around us. It seems that the week straight of rain (or so it seemed!) combined with 3 days over 75 degrees has made for bright color and severe pollen levels. So, between my extra long days at work and feeling under the weather (allergies) the blog has been quiet.

Here are my knitting updates:

I did get through Chart A on my Ishbel. (YAY!) I am now on Row 2 of Chart B. I'm only working on it during the weekends, hence why it is going so slow.

I'm still working on my Chevron Scarf. I am almost done with ball #3, so just one more to go!

I've also been adding to my Ravelry que, so I'm up to 55 patterns I would like to make! YIKES! I best get better and keep those knitting needles flying!

Until next time....

Spring...

Happy Spring!

This photo was taken from beside our front steps this morning! Also, as of yesterday, the last pile of snow is gone!

I have been slowly working on the lace sections of my Ishbel. Can you see from the photo what row I'm on?

That is correct, Row 2. Yes, when I said I'm working on it slowly I truly meant it!

I hope to get another row done this weekend. I already have a life line in place. Now the question is how frequently do I place these life lines...the way my Ishbel knitting has gone I feel like it should be every other row!!

Well, off to soak up some of this wonderful sun! The doors and windows are open as well as the study books.

Enjoy your Spring Day!

A Tale of 3 Ishbels, Part 3

Let us try this again...

CO 3 stitches. So far, so good!

Pick up stitches. Hmm, I do not remember it being this tight. Maybe it is just the new needles. I mean it has been months since I last CO for this....maybe it was this tight previously.

Bring on the triangle! Boy do I love these needles! The yarn and my fingers are flying!!

But wait...when I hold up the piece something does not look right. I look at the pattern and realize I messed up ON THE FIRST ROW!! Well technically on the first 3 rows. STINKER!

What comes next is a breakdown of being totally stressed out, feeling like I can not do this...I mean if 5,881 people can do this on Ravelry clearly I'm the only idiot who can't figure this out.

Breathe. Breathe again. Put away the needles and regroup with it tomorrow....off window shopping we go.

I did come back in a much better mood. I decide that I'm going to cut this piece off of the yarn cake. I'm going to frame it because I am not a quitter!
Did you think I was kidding about the frame? I'm not pleased with how it lays in the frame, so I may take it out and block it! Yes - I'm going to block it so it looks better in the frame! Call me what you will! :-)

This frame now resides on my desk at home. It is a reminder that I'm going to persevere.

CO to Ishbel try #3....
(still irked that blogger rotates my photos!)

To answer your questions:
Yes I CO the correct amount of stitches.
Yes the next 3 rows I did correctly.
I plan on putting in a Life Line on the last row of stockinette stitch.
Yes I am counting every single row.
No I am not knitting the nights I'm stressed from work.
No this isn't my travel project (see Chevron scarf!).

Let us hope this is the Ishbel that will be finished and worn with pride! As my DH likes to say "All in due time!"

A Tale of 3 Ishbels, Part 2

Well let me tell you something, the stitch count was STILL off the next morning. Reality sets in. I must do the dreaded FROGGING! OK, I do can this...just keep breathing.

If I pull really gently I only have to frog the row 5 and start it over again. No problem. It is a win-win! I do not have to knit it all over again yet still get to correct the problem. So, I start ripping just a couple of stitches at a time....getting closer to the end....g-o-i-n-g  s-l-o-w-l-y....OH NO it took some from the next row.

Okay, I'll just rip it back to the stockinette stitches. I'm only losing a total of 5 rows. Breathe. I mean come on 5 rows, big deal!

Pulling slowly, I announce "Do not talk to me until I'm done this!". The room is empty. DH was a smart man and had left the room a long time ago.

OK I can't do this. I can not figure out how to pick up the right stitches as after you pull them apart they get wonky. Yes, wonky.

DH yells from other end of house, "take a breather". So, I head online to Ravelry. It gives me two words that I had failed to read previously:
Life Lines

What are those?! Oh, scrap yarn you knit into your row(s) that help if you need to frog back. Someone mentions that the Knit Pick needles work well for these, due to the holes in the circular sets.

WELL that doesn't help me now. Yarn and needles go into knitting bag for a time out.

Days pass.
Weeks pass.
Christmas comes (brings Harmony needles) and goes.
Tuscany Shawl has been started AND finished. (so much for Ishbel being the first!)

Somewhere in the midst of all that DH brings up my Ishbel and gently asks if I want him to frog it to ease the pain of taking out all that work. I do not know the answer he was expecting, but I say if you want to.

One day I come home from work and my skein of beautiful periwinkle sea silk is sitting on my sofa.

This yarn really does deserve to become an Ishbel.

Let me try again, this time with my new Knit Pick's Harmony needles!

A Tale of 3 Ishbels, Part 1

Where do I begin?

I fell in love with the lace shawl call Ishbel last summer. I saw my Amy Singer wearing one back in September. (did you notice the 'my'?) So, I bought the book from the designer's website. You can find Ysolda here.

I knew the perfect yarn that would work perfectly on the pattern.

It was Handmaiden Sea Silk in Periwinkle colorway. I was able to score a 150 grams larger hank of this from The Loopy Ewe.

I started doing my research. I had the yarn and the pattern. This was going to be my first shawl actual triangle shawl from a pattern and I wanted it to be perfect. I read the Ravelry discussion boards for the opinions on needles, gauge, circulars verses straights, to use stitch markers or not, counts of each row etc.

I had heard over and over that the pointy tipped needles were going to work the best for me. So, CO on my Ishbel. I was ready, I had my Addi Lace Turbo needles (recently freed up from all that Christmas knitting!).

I was cruising:
I loved how the color was working. It is a little variegated and I was SO happy! However, I paused when I got to the lace portion. I was nervous! So, I waited until a bright sunny Saturday afternoon before Christmas to start Section A. I was off and running. I CAN do this!

Row 1 of Section A - DONE
Row 2 of Section A - DONE
Row 3 of Section A - DONE
Row 4 of Section A - DONE
Row 5 of Section A - something isn't right here

Something is very wrong, I do not have the correct number of stitches at the end of the row to do what the pattern is telling me I need to do. This isn't good. Panic sets it.

I recount the stitches....and again....because the being off on counting truly must be in my head. I must have skipped counting some stitches. I mean how do I lose them when I've been knitting with saying the stitches out loud.

Ok still in panic mode. Maybe I'll just put it away for the night and they say things will be clearer in the morning.

Stay tuned!

Stitch Scarf Completed

YAY! I LOVE this scarf!!
Pattern: Stitch Scarf
Yarn: Handmaiden Sea Three
Colorway: Sangria
Yardage: 246 yards, I have 4 grams left
CO: 20 then increased

The top photo really shows the colorway best. It is THAT bright! However, I like how it looks in my yarn bowl!

This pattern was great for mindless knitting while watching TV. I was flying with it on my Harmony Needles. Of which, my DH heard, probably every night, I was knitting this scarf, how much those needles truly rock!

I'd love to make another one in another color, but there are so many other fine patterns out there in my Ravelry que (that would be 70!) it makes it hard to repeat.

I've also made a little progress on my chevron scarf. I've used 2 balls of yarn so far, so I have 2 balls left to go. I've basically come to the conclusion that this will not be done for this winter season. The more I think about it, it is a good thing. The yarn and scarf is light enough to make for a nice summer knit - with our humidity!
I finally have another bunny photo for you. This was a gift from my SIL almost 15 years ago! Too cute!!

Stitch Scarf Progress

We've had a bright morning with the big snowflakes coming down, so I was able to take an accurate color photo.

This is my latest scarf project:

It is a one row repeat so it is flying on my needles.  See how bright that color is? It is going to look stunning with my black dress!

Rain

and more rain and more rain. The weatherman says we will not see the sun until Tuesday! That is like 5 days away, not counting the past 3 days of snow and rain.

So, needless to say I do not have an updated photo of my stitch scarf. I could pull out the photo tent, but instead chose to work out tonight. I got a new W!! dance game. Oh my....I'm going to be sore tomorrow!

Anyway, not to leave you without a photo, I'll leave you with a pic of our cute bunny. This was the first time she ate my left over apple from the core. I'm usually chopping it up for her in little pieces.

How about another Tuscany photo?

I brought my Tuscany into work with me today. As one of my staff members wanted to see my 'gorgeous' shawl!

My boss told me I should consider using my knitting talent and consignment my finished items.
My reply: "That would take the fun out of it."

Do you feel like that? The feeling that you have put so much of yourself into knitting something that you want to give it to a person that will enjoy it or be selfish and keep it!

A post for the birds

Of all the birds photos I've taking during this storm, this is my favorite showing our cardinal couple. We've named them Booth & Bones! Yes - we really enjoy that show!

I was SO careful walking out the door this morning as to not step on any bird prints and asked my DH to take a photo as I get home after dark. Thank you DH! You can see the tip of a bush on the right hand side the birds have spent many hours in that bush.
I know I need to take some more bunny photos around the house. Hopefully I'll get to that shortly!

Tw!tter

Amy Singer just sent out a tweet and the link comes here to my Tuscany Shawl! http://twitter.com/knittydotcom

WOOT!

Well, pull me off the ceiling!

Cast off again

I can't help it. I am a knitting addict and no I do not want a 12 step program for this! I'm still feeling over the moon with having finished my Tuscany shawl on Saturday!

Since my Chevron Scarf is still in time out I started another scarf.

This is the Handmaiden Sea Three from The Loopy Ewe. The colorway is Sangria.

I have to be honest, I went out on a limb and purchased this colorway, when I originally saw the hank out of the shipping box I was disapointed. However, once I wound the hank into a cake the colorway grew on me.

I really like how it is knitting up in my scarf.

(Grrr...but I'm not liking blogger rotating my photos! Sorry for the head tilt that is required!)

Pattern: Stitch Scarf
Yarn: Handmaiden Sea Three
Colorway: Sangria

Finished Tuscany Photos

I'm so pleased with how the Tuscany came out! I love how Sea Silk blocks...it shows such stitch definition (considering I had it crammed onto 24" needles!).

After the last picture you saw of the blocking, I took Amy Singer's advise and blocked it this way:

It really makes the sides equal.

Pattern: Tuscany  (from 'No Sheep for You' book)
Designer: Amy Singer
Yarn: Handmaiden Sea Silk
Colorway: Pumpkin
Yardage: 100 gram hank, 4 grams remaining! Approximately 430 yards used
Needles: Addi Turbo Lace US 6 Circulars

I truly love how it looks and can not wait to wear it!

Saturday, February 20, 2010

How many stitches now...

NONE!

I am over the moon with happiness that I finished this today.

As you can tell it is still in the first round of blocking:

Once this dries I'm going to be blocking it again in half. I learned this little trick from my favorite idol! This will give me equal length on the sides.

I'll have more photos when it is dry (and the sun is out!).

How many...

That would be 2,128 stitches left to finish my tuscany shawl.....then again WHO is really counting? I'm determined to finish it this weekend and start the blocking process.

Back to knitting....

Happy Valentines Day!
